Rena Friswell has worked in road and occupational safety research for over 15 years, initially at Worksafe Australia and now at UNSW. She has a particular interest in driver fatigue as a risk factor for injury and has been involved in large scale surveys on the issue, analyses of injury and accident datasets, and laboratory and workplace studies. This research has examined the fundamental nature of fatigue as well as organizational and regulatory management strategies. Many of the studies targeted fatigue in the long distance road transport industry, but others have investigated fatigue in other industries (e.g., rail, manufacturing) and among other road user groups, (e.g., motorcyclists).

Currently, Rena is involved in TARS projects to: develop a practical safety management audit tool for light vehicle fleets, determine how well drivers can assess their fatigue level before it impairs their driving performance, and identify effective elements for safety management systems in heavy transport operations. She is also finishing a PhD on the safety issues, including fatigue, that face light and short haul freight drivers.
