UN_Road_Safety_Resolution

On 10 April, 2014 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on “Improving global road safety”. The resolution was sponsored by the Government of the Russian Federation and co-sponsored by many other countries, including Australia, specifically recognise that transport infrastructure management must take into account road safety as part of the effort to achieve sustainable development. It urges all Member States to prepare and implement national road safety plans, consistent with the objectives of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety, 2011-2020. The UN Road Safety Resolutions and other documents may be found here http://www.un.org/en/roadsafety/documents.shtml .

Meeting in New York just prior to the General Assembly debated this resolution, the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration met to discuss progress on the Global Plan and ways that the Collaboration’ Project Groups would support each Pillar of the Plan. These pillars include:
  • Road Safety Management;
  • Safer Roads and Mobility;
  • Safer Vehicles;
  • Safer Road Users; and
  • Post-crash Response.

Two other Project Groups specifically addressed Work Related Road Safety and Monitoring and Evaluation.

The Pillar 1, Road Safety Management project group, is pursuing a project of documenting improved practices in each region, such as Argentina, to provide relevant role models in Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, South and South East Asia, China and Eastern Europe as well as the more advanced OECD countries.  The Collaboration congratulated Argentina for its successful efforts to achieve road safety through a strong partnership between Government, the corporate sector and non-profit organisations.
